Divergent Review; Lili T
Over the summer I read Divergent by Veronica Roth published in 2011. It is about a girl named Beatrice (Tris) who has to live life in a system of factions what are divided up based off the way your mind thinks. Amity are the kind and peaceful, Dauntless are the daring and brave, Abnegation are the selfless and modest, and Erudite are the intelligent. When you turn 16, you have to take something called an aptitude test which determines which faction you would best fit into on choosing day. However, Tris ends up being divergent which means she doesn’t fit into any category which is dangerous for her, because the government believe they can’t control divergent’s and want to kill them.
This wasn’t the first time I’ve read Divergent since I enjoy reading it a lot and personally it’s my favorite book of the series. I’d have to say my favorite overall message of the book is that when you hit rock bottom the only way to go is up. Tris has to face a lot of challenges throughout the book and through training for the faction she chooses for most of training, she is the worst of her class, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. She works extra hard to prove she is good enough to be part of the faction. If you don’t pass faction training, you become something called factionless which is basically homeless.
Other than Tris proving she can climb to the top, the book goes through her struggles and how she gets through them. Tris is a very strong and well-developed main character and has significant character growth throughout the book. It is easy to follow her thoughts and it almost makes you feel like you’re there with her. The book is very detailed and most importantly it’s fun to read. My favorite part is the Ferris wheel scene where she proves her skill to her faction, and everyone suddenly realizes that she’s not just some skinny quiet scrawny girl. The Ferris wheel scene is important to the book because it opens the doors to the rest of the book which may be why the Ferris wheel is on the cover of Divergent.
Divergent is a pretty popular book but if you haven’t read it I would definitely recommend it! Thank you for reading, Lili Tiouririne.
Nice review! A lot of people have recommended this book to me but I haven't got around to reading it yet. You did a good job on giving a basic rundown of the plot and message and it sounds like you enjoyed reading it so I may have to check this out sometime.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about Tris' character! It was also a lot of fun to read for me as well, and was also my favorite book in the series. I didn't think about the book's message about 'once you hit rock botton, you can only go up," but after reading it in your review, I definitely agree it was part of the novel's theme.
ReplyDeleteYour review is very interesting and I like the way that you explain the message of the book and the specific scenes that show it. I read Divergent in sixth grade and I never really thought about the message until now. Your post made me see how powerful and evident the message is throughout the book.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this review! I read this book a couple of years ago, as a simple minded child, and didn't pick up on the theme you mentioned, so I hope to be able to read it again. I liked how you described Tris' journey of having to prove her own worth. I also agree with your description of the book being a fun read. It's not TOO complicated, so anybody can read it.

ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this book but now I wish that I had. Based on the little bit of information you gave, the book's concepts and ideas sound interesting as well as the characters. Your review gives the reader lots of information but you managed to make it so it doesn't overwhelm the reader. Overall, I'd say this is a very well written review and I'll be sure to look into the book.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to read this book series, but I never got around to actually reading it. I enjoyed your review of the book. The message you found from the book seems like an interesting theme for a book. I also liked how you didn't add spoilers, that way when I do read the book I wouldn't know what is going to happen. I hope to find some time to read this book series.
