The Beginning Of Everything Review; Lili T

The Beginning of Everything review by Lili Tiouririne
Recently I have been reading The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider published in 2013, however I have not finished it yet. So far the book has been slow and trugging on. It starts off with the main character Ezra recalling a memory from middle school with his at the time best friend Toby. Erza is the kind of kid that believes everyone has a tragedy in their life at some point just waiting to happen. His came his senior year in highschool. One night a reckless driver crashed into his car and shattered his knee. Now he has to face his new life after his own personal tragedy. Erza is the type of kid who gets great grades, is always the class president, and knows everyone; but in the wake of his tragedy he has been very lost. He now can’t play tennis anymore and has lost the school’s attention. On top of it all, he just split with his girlfriend. However, in the light of things Toby and Erza’s friendship is slowly starting to re-form as they are now both the "outcasts."
What I like about Erza’s character is the fact that he has been through so much already but doesn’t give up hope. So far he has found himself in a horrible rut and he doesn’t know what to do. But he still fights everyday and waits for his old life to come back. He knows that the odds of that are unlikely but he still fights anyway. He can’t play tennis anymore but he still hopes that one day he can go back to playing and his heart is still in it. With not even reading the whole book, I can already tell that despite his struggles, Erza is a strong and independent character.
So far, the book has an interesting storyline and I want to know what happens in general. However, like I said before, the book is really slow and gets boring at times. It also does a lot more tell rather than show in certain parts of the book. For example during the car crash scene you don't ever get a sense of how Erza feels and what’s going on with his social life. It kinda just happens then skips to the next school year to when now all of a sudden he's an outcast. It is a generally good book so far so I would not say don’t read it but, I would only read it if you have the patience for slower books. I am going to continue reading this book and following Erza’s journey through senior year, and who knows maybe the book may become much more interesting.

  1. Thanks for this review! This doesn't quite sound like the type of book I would personally enjoy, but I thought you did a good job offering the main good and bad parts of the story. I could see how that plot could get boring at times, and I also most certainly prefer an author who can show not tell. I liked how you said why someone may or may not like it based on their patients while reading books and I look forward to reading your reviews in the future.
