All That Was; Lili T
Hello, it’s Lili again with the start of a two blog post series. Currently, I am halfway through All That Was by Karen Rivers, published in 2018. It tells the story of two best friends Piper and Sloane. Piper is a cheerful, beautiful, and popular girl, while Sloane is more of the shy, quiet, and some might even say, weird girl. They grew up together and do everything together, their friendship was supposed to last forever. However, all that changes when Piper falls for the cute boy in town Soup. They fall in love and the reader can tell that Sloane and Piper’s friendship is starting to fade. Little does Piper know that Sloane has a secret crush on Soup. Piper is later found dead washed up on the beach.
The book starts off in the present where Piper is dead but she’s not sure what's going on. You get a feel for her inner thoughts and the deep emotional pain running through her. Then it moves on to Sloane's point of view and what happens when she receives the news. After that brief bit, the book tells the events leading up to Piper's death through Sloane's point of view. Here the reader can get a better sense of Piper and Sloane as people and what makes their friendship so special, yet so tragic.
So far I am really enjoying this book, it is full of drama and unexpected twists. My only complaints about the book are that there are no chapters. There are only parts, kind of like a play. The first two parts which are described above, are fairly short as they serve as an intro to the book. However, I am halfway through the book and so far the third part hasn’t ended. It does have section breaks though, but personally, I am someone that likes having chapters in a book. All That Was can also sometimes get a little confusing since there are no chapters because there are lots of scene switches and different times where Sloane will talk to different people.
Overall I can’t wait to finish this book and see where Soup and Sloane's lives will go after Piper. Stay tuned for my impressions of the book after I’ve finished reading it!
(Disclaimer I apologize that this is posted later than intended, the blog was acting up.)
I have never heard of this book, but after reading your review, I might try it out! I enjoyed reading your summary, as it was concise yet captivating. I agree with your thoughts on the formatting of the book, as it can be very annoying when books don't have chapters. This was a great blog post, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the book!
ReplyDeleteNo chapters?! Eh, whatever! This book sounds interesting regardless. I hope that the love triangle has something to do with the murder as the murder throws a nice twist in there. I loved hearing about Piper's and Sloane's friendship. They sound like such an unlikely alliance, yet they make for such a perfect one. This book is definitely something that I will check out in the future.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great book, and I like how you broke it up into two separate blog posts. It will be interesting to compare what you think about the book when you are done reading to what you thought about it halfway through. I agree that having chapters would make the book a little better since it helps me keep track of where I am, but it still seems like it would be a good book regardless. I will be sure to read this book sometime, and I look forward to reading your second post about this book.
