The Hate U Give

Hi guys it's Lili and today I will be reviewing and talking about The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.

Summary: The book centers around Starr a 16 year old African-American girl. She constantly has to lead a double life which is sometimes hard for her. She goes to a school one hour away where she is the only black kid in her grade, and she's forced to act a certain way. Recently Starr has witnessed the death of her friend who was shot by a white police officer. This makes the whole race thing a lot harder for Starr as she already finds it an issue to tell her dad about her white boyfriend. Starr faces many challenges along her journey of recovery and acceptance, she learned who her real friends truly are along the way. One thing is clear though, she is a strong girl with a big heart, and will always fight for what she believes in.

Characters (not all of them): Starr is the Main character which I briefly described above. Her boyfriend Chris is a rich white boy which is why Starr feels like there's still so much distance between them. Throughout the book he is always there for Starr even if it's hard for him because Starr is keeping secrets. He share's Starrs love of music and sneakers. Chris is a character that learns not to crack under pressure which works to his advantage. Between meeting Starrs family and being judged for dating her at school life get's hard for him sometimes. The next major character is Hailey, she is Starr's school best friend. I say this because she is one of the reasons Starr lives a double life sometimes. Not only is she rich and white but she at one point in the book doesn't see whats wrong with the shooting that occurred that impacted Starrs childhood friend. She ends up being an important character in the whole double life story and in terms of character development.

Review: I think this book is definitely a 10/10. However, this is the one time where I will say the movie is better than the book but only because it really brings to life the books meaning and sadness. The book is very descriptive and you feel like you are literally stepping into Starr's shoes. The author does a good job of creating character development as Starr and her friends have changed so much by the end of the book. It is a book that you will want to keep turning the pages. It has the perfect amount of suspense and the plot twists fit perfectly. Other books tend to have crazy plot twists that just make the book confusing. Another good thing about the book is that it will keep you engaged and it is not slow. The plot is constantly moving and changing as the book goes on. Finally, the book teaches an amazing lesson. Not only about race, but friendships and standing up for what you believe in. As a teen sometimes it's hard to do that because your friends might be the thing stopping you, but this book show's you that if they're truly your friends they will back you up.
